Recyclables
Here are a few things that you may
or may not know are recyclable:
Contact your local recycling facility or landfill to determine what items they accept
- Newspapers
- Plastic
- Coated plastic: milk cartons, juice cartons, etc.
- Corrugated cardboard (the cardboard with the little ripples in between the layers)
- Non-corrugated cardboard: cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, etc.
- Kitchen appliances (there are specific places at your town dump to recycle these items)
- Electronics such as computers, printers, cell phones etc.
- Batteries
- CFL light bulbs
Instead of recommending paper bags at the grocery store, recommend re-usable bags first and say "and if you forget them, opt for the paper!"
Also another bullet under the cleaning section could be to use vegetable based cleaning products because chemical based cleaning products contain an assortment of harsh chemicals that get released into the air such as VOC's (volatile organic compounds) that can be toxic, and other chemicals that can have cancer-causing affects. These chemicals have been shown to affect infants and children stronger than adults. †For more information on the affect of chemicals in cleaning products, visit the US Department of Health and Human Services at www.hpd.nlm.nih.gov www.hpd.nlm.nih.gov or Healthy Child, Healthy World at www.healthychild.org www.healthychild.org.
Garbage
- Utilize what you have, spending less money and sparing the earth excess garbage.
- Try not to use plastic bags for garbage. Use Brown Grocery Bags
- Put non-wet items directly into the brown bag
- Save containers that food comes in (such as cereal boxes, salad containers, etc.) to put wet items in and then add to the brown bag.
- Either have an outdoor compost or a portable kitchen compost to dispose of excess veggie and fruit scraps, skins, etc.
- Use your garbage disposal as little as possible. It uses more water than simply placing the scraps in the compost.
